January Thaw
There is so much about living in Vermont that I love. And to be so close to water is a genuine, and enduring thrill to me. I don't even mind the Winter — once I invested in real boots (OK, a few pairs) and an incredibly warm parka, the Patagonia Tres 3 in 1, I feel I can venture out in just about any weather.
January Thaw occurs when temperatures rise typically in mid-January, by 10 degrees or so, which may not be enough to melt the lake ice. Every year, indeed every day in New England is different — one of the reason I love it. Some years the ice on the Lake is so thick, people drive trucks across it, other years the ice comes and goes.
